Rue Sainte-Catherine in Bordeaux: History, Shopping and Property
A guide to the Rue Sainte-Catherine, the longest pedestrian shopping street in France. History, shops and property prices along Bordeaux's most famous avenue.

Where is the Rue Sainte-Catherine?
The Rue Sainte-Catherine runs through the historic centre of Bordeaux on a north-south axis, stretching 1,200 metres from the Place de la Victoire and its Porte d'Aquitaine to the Place de la Comedie and the Grand Theatre. Almost parallel to the Garonne, the street passes 500 metres west of the Basilique Saint-Michel and the Porte de Bourgogne, and fewer than 300 metres from the Place de la Bourse. The Place des Quinconces lies fewer than 200 metres beyond its northern end, while the Meriadeck district begins roughly 700 metres to the west.
The origins of the Rue Sainte-Catherine
The street takes its name from the Chapelle Sainte-Catherine, an eleventh-century chapel that once stood on the site of the present-day Fnac store. The last traces of the chapel disappeared in the mid-nineteenth century, but the commercial character of the street dates back at least as far. Traffic grew steadily through the twentieth century until part of the street was pedestrianised in 1977, with the full length following in 1984.
At the heart of the historic centre, the Rue Sainte-Catherine forms part of the urban ensemble inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007. The Promenade Sainte-Catherine, an open-air shopping centre organised around a central square on two levels, opened in 2015 and added a contemporary layer to an already dense retail landscape.
Shopping and local life
Widely described as the longest pedestrian shopping street in France, the Rue Sainte-Catherine is Bordeaux's principal retail destination. Fashion, sportswear, homeware and accessories brands line both sides, and biannual sales events in February and July draw shoppers from across the region. Restaurants, cafes and fast-food outlets fill the gaps between the shops.
The Promenade Sainte-Catherine complex adds nearly 20,000 square metres and 35 boutiques, accessible from both the Rue Sainte-Catherine and the Rue de la Porte Dijeaux. Together with the Galeries Lafayette and the Fnac, the Promenade is one of the addresses that keeps the street lively on Sundays as well as weekdays.
Property on the Rue Sainte-Catherine
Property prices along the Rue Sainte-Catherine reflect the street's extraordinary length, which spans from the Capucins-Victoire neighbourhood in the south to the edge of the Quinconces in the north. The lowest prices sit around 4,300 euros per square metre, while the most sought-after apartments near the Grand Theatre can reach 5,750 euros. The median across the full length of the street is approximately 5,100 euros per square metre.
The Rue Sainte-Catherine is the backbone of central Bordeaux, and the upper floors above its shopfronts contain some of the city's most desirable period apartments with stone facades and balconies overlooking the pedestrian street.
