Legendary Lights at the Heart of Bordeaux

Inspired by the traditional Chinese Lantern Festival, the Lumieres Legendaires is a large-scale light festival held each winter at the Parc Bordelais in Bordeaux's Cauderan neighbourhood. Several hundred giant lanterns, handcrafted by artisans using ancestral techniques, transform the park into an illuminated wonderland from mid-November through to early January.

Each evening after dark, visitors walk through scenes populated by luminous creatures both real and fantastical: tigers and unicorns, ibises and hummingbirds, lotus flowers and towering bamboo groves. The lanterns play off the park's mature trees, rolling terrain and still water, creating reflections that double the visual spectacle. Live performances punctuate the route, including traditional Chinese fire juggling and acrobatic displays repeated four times each evening. A food court and artisan souvenir stalls selling hand-made fans, miniature lanterns and silk scarves round off the experience.

The Festival in Numbers

The Lumieres Legendaires takes over 3 hectares of the Parc Bordelais each evening from 6pm to 10pm. The average visit lasts around one hour, longer for those who linger at the performances and themed scenes. The event comprises 30 themed tableaux made up of 500 giant lanterns, constructed from over 8 kilometres of silk stretched across 26 tonnes of metal framework. A total of 25,000 LED bulbs bring the sculptures to light, the largest of which is a 20-metre dragon. Forty Chinese artisans, each a specialist in traditional lantern-making, work by hand to create every piece.

The Origins of the Lantern Festival

The tradition traces back to a Chinese legend. A sacred bird descended into the mortal world and was killed by a hunter. The Emperor of Heaven, furious, decided to set the earth ablaze on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month. His daughter, moved by the fate of humankind, came down to warn the people. A wise man devised a plan: every household lit a red lantern, so that from the sky the land appeared to be already burning. The Emperor believed his punishment had been carried out. According to the legend, the lanterns also drove away wild beasts, and the custom of lighting them on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month has been observed ever since.

The Lumieres Legendaires festival brings this tradition to cities across Europe. In Bordeaux, the elegant setting of the Parc Bordelais, with its century-old trees and winding paths, provides a particularly atmospheric backdrop.
