The history and architecture of the Théâtre des Chartrons
In the nineteenth century, the cours du Médoc was the nerve centre of Bordeaux's wine trade. Nathaniel Johnston, Calvet, Cruse, the names that built Bordeaux's viticultural reputation all operated in the Chartrons quarter, and the cellars of the Galerie Tatry formed part of the chain that linked Médoc vineyards to the Garonne shipping quays. The dressed stone chosen for these warehouses, selected for its resistance to the humidity of ground-level storage, is the same stone that now frames the Théâtre des Chartrons' stage.
The barrel-vault ceiling, originally sized for stacking casks, creates a sound volume that the stone walls bounce naturally back towards the audience, an acoustic quality that purpose-built venues typically struggle to replicate. Lighting, the main modern addition, is designed to bring out the stone's texture without turning the space into a set piece. Along the cours du Médoc and rue Notre-Dame, the neighbourhood's other wine cellars have followed similar paths, converted into art galleries, antique workshops and wine bars.
