Rue du Tondu in Bordeaux: History, Shops and Property
A guide to the Rue du Tondu, a long residential avenue linking the Cours d'Albret to the Boulevard du Marechal Leclerc. History, local services and property prices.

Where is the Rue du Tondu?
The Rue du Tondu is one of the longer residential streets in central Bordeaux, stretching nearly 1,200 metres from the Cours d'Albret in the east to the Boulevard du Marechal Leclerc in the west. It begins just behind the Hopital Saint-Andre and runs roughly parallel to the buried course of the Peugue stream, sitting on the boundary between the Meriadeck and Saint-Genes neighbourhoods. The Place de la Victoire and the start of the Rue Sainte-Catherine are 500 metres from its eastern end, while the Stade Chaban-Delmas lies 350 metres from the western end. The University of Bordeaux campus is a short walk to the south.
The origins of the Rue du Tondu
The street takes its name from one of the natural springs that once fed Bordeaux, giving rise to a small tributary of the Peugue. Le Tondu was also the name of one of the country estates that occupied the still-rural territory around Saint-Augustin during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The street itself came into being after the grands boulevards were laid out in the mid-nineteenth century, when the area between Meriadeck and Saint-Genes was progressively built up.
The architectural mix along the Rue du Tondu reflects this gradual urbanisation. Traditional Bordelais echoppes stand alongside later nineteenth-century stone buildings and, at the Meriadeck end, twentieth-century residential blocks such as the apartment building at the corner of the Rue Sainte-Cecile. The result is a streetscape that charts more than a century of the city's growth.
Shops and local life
The Rue du Tondu is primarily residential, yet a steady succession of neighbourhood services punctuates its length. Among the addresses are a beauty salon at the Cours d'Albret corner, a dentist, a paediatrician, a tobacconist, a wool shop at the corner of the Rue Belleville, a pharmacy and a medical practice at the Rue Theodore Ducos junction, a nursery, a restaurant at the Rue Francois de Sourdis corner, a radiology clinic, a veterinary surgery and a second pharmacy near the Boulevard Marechal Leclerc.
Bus lines 11 and 24 serve the street directly. The Meriadeck shopping centre is close by, and the bars, restaurants and cafes around the Place de la Victoire are fewer than 700 metres from the eastern end, giving residents easy access to one of the liveliest squares in the city.
Property on the Rue du Tondu
Property prices on the Rue du Tondu are in line with the surrounding Saint-Bruno Saint-Victor area. Apartments sell at a median price of around 4,850 euros per square metre, with the highest prices reaching approximately 5,750 euros for the most sought-after properties and the lowest around 4,100 euros per square metre. Houses in the immediate area range from 3,750 to 5,100 euros per square metre, with an average close to 4,350 euros.
The Rue du Tondu offers the calm of a residential street with the convenience of central Bordeaux just minutes away, where traditional echoppes and stone-fronted apartments come onto the market regularly. A full selection of properties is available among the properties for sale in Bordeaux.
