Rue Bouffard in Bordeaux: Art, Antiques and Property
A guide to the Rue Bouffard in central Bordeaux, home to the Musee des Arts Decoratifs et du Design, antique dealers, art galleries and some of the most sought-after addresses in the city centre.

Where is the Rue Bouffard?
On the left bank of the Garonne, in the historic centre of Bordeaux, the Rue Bouffard runs from the city hall on Rue Montbazon up to the Porte Dijeaux and the Place Gambetta. Stretching 250 metres, it runs parallel to the Rue des Remparts and flanks the Musee des Arts Decoratifs et du Design. Its axis follows the course of the Garonne at the level of the Eglise Saint-Pierre and the Place de la Bourse, though roughly 800 metres further west. The Meriadeck district lies just behind the Cours d'Albret, within easy walking distance.
The origins of the Rue Bouffard
The Rue Bouffard is best known for housing, at number 39, the Musee des Arts Decoratifs et du Design. The museum occupies the Hotel de Lalande, an elegant townhouse built in 1778 for one of Bordeaux's wealthiest families. Over the centuries the building served as a noble residence, a police station and a prison before opening to the public in 1955 as a museum of decorative arts. In 2013, its collections expanded to include contemporary design, prompting a broader restoration programme.
The street's cultural vocation extends beyond the museum. For several decades, the Rue Bouffard has attracted interior decoration studios, luthiers, art galleries and antique dealers, giving it a distinctly refined character within the city centre.
Shops and local life
Despite its central location, the Rue Bouffard remains a quiet, contemplative street. The shops are predominantly antique dealers, art galleries, decoration boutiques and music stores. The semi-pedestrianised road also hosts a coworking space and a growing number of independent designer boutiques. The atmosphere is gentle and inspiring, with a second-hand bookseller, a florist specialising in succulents, a Persian rug dealer, a historic armourer and an interior design showroom drawing on global trends all within a few steps of each other. In the evenings the street is calm, returned to its residents.
Property on the Rue Bouffard
The area around the city hall is highly sought-after, and properties on the Rue Bouffard are particularly prized. The average apartment price is around 5,450 euros per square metre, higher than the surrounding neighbourhood. Depending on the condition, architectural character, presence of a lift, quality of restoration, insulation and natural light, apartment prices can range from roughly 4,600 to over 6,300 euros per square metre. Houses average around 4,750 euros per square metre, also above the local market.
The Rue Bouffard lies within the Triangle d'Or, one of Bordeaux's most prestigious addresses, where elegant period apartments and historic townhouses attract buyers seeking both character and centrality. A full selection of properties is available among the apartments and houses for sale in Bordeaux.
