The history of Parc Rivière

Parc Rivière began life as the private landscaped garden of a nineteenth-century bourgeois château belonging to Baron Alfred de Luze, a prominent Bordeaux wine merchant. The woodland paths still wind past the ruins of the grand house built in 1827. After the baron's descendants left the estate, the château and its grounds were sold to the city in 1977. Extensive renovation work followed, and the park opened to the public in 1982.

Covering four hectares in the Fondaudège and Tivoli area, Parc Rivière is considered the shadiest and coolest green space in Bordeaux. Century-old trees, the weathered stone remnants of the château towers and walls, and a set of beautifully restored period stables give the park a character quite unlike any other in the city. Wildlife thrives here, with red squirrels and blue tits among the regular residents. The botanical highlights include ancient sweet chestnuts and holm oaks, a bald cypress classified as a Remarkable Tree of France, and a monumental wisteria of considerable age. What to see and do

Beyond its quiet, shaded paths, the park holds a number of surprises. Beehives sit among the château ruins, birdhouses dot the branches overhead, and a participatory lending library invites visitors to borrow or leave a book. A children's playground occupies one corner of the grounds, and QR codes placed along the paths link to botanical information about the species growing nearby. Shared allotment plots encourage local residents to try their hand at gardening, adding a community dimension to an already welcoming space.

The former stables of Château Rivière have been fully restored and now house the Maison du Jardinier et de la Nature en Ville. Inside, visitors will find workshop spaces for public gardening sessions, an exhibition and conference area, a reading room and an elegant 75-square-metre greenhouse. The centre is dedicated to ecological gardening and hosts a programme of workshops and events throughout the year, from birdhouse-building sessions to family activities. The park also features an orienteering course and an accessible chess table designed for wheelchair users.
