The Théâtre Femina in Bordeaux
2026 programme, history and practical information. Everything you need to know about the Théâtre Femina, one of Bordeaux's finest performance venues.

Where rue de Grassi meets the Place des Grands Hommes, the Théâtre Femina has imposed its Art Deco silhouette since 1921. Designed by architect André Bac, this former car garage turned Pathé cinema found its true calling as the largest private performance venue in the Triangle d'Or. Today, its 1,145 seats split between stalls and balcony allow the Théâtre Femina to move from stand-up comedy to classical ballet in the space of a single week, a versatility born of its many past lives.

The history and architecture of the Théâtre Femina
Few Bordeaux venues have lived as many lives. Before the Théâtre Femina, the site housed a horse stable, then a car garage, then an auction room. It was Victor Bonneterre and Ulysse Sédard, director of the Arcachon casino, who saw in this vast empty volume the makings of a performance hall. Construction began in 1919 and the inauguration followed in 1921. André Bac designed the reinforced concrete structure, innovative for its time.
Inside, the registers blend with a boldness that is thoroughly Bordelais. The gilded pilaster capitals designed by decorator Jean Artus frame green-backed panels, while Edmond Tuffet's sculptures punctuate the walls. Above it all, the painted dome by Gustave Larée, Prix de Rome 1895, depicts the apotheosis of Pierrot, of dance and of modern music. The marriage of Louis XVI and Art Deco should not work, yet it gives the hall a personality that audiences recognise the moment they settle into the balcony.
In the 1930s, the Théâtre Femina turned cinema under the "Fémina Pathé" banner, then signed a deal with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in 1936. By the late 1970s, the stage and spotlights returned. Now led by Malika Josse, director since 2020, the Théâtre Femina has become once again what it should never have stopped being.
