The Bois de Thouars in Talence
An oak forest at the heart of the Bordeaux metropolitan area. The Bois de Thouars in Talence is an exceptionally well-preserved natural retreat, easy to reach and rich in wildlife.

A green lung south-west of Bordeaux
The Bois de Thouars lies on the edge of the Bordeaux-Montaigne university campus in Talence, less than five kilometres south-west of the city centre and the Garonne waterfront. Its 60 hectares of green space are roughly half covered by woodland, making it one of the largest natural areas within the Bordeaux metropolitan area. The site carries a double classification as a Zone Naturelle d'interet national and an Espace Boise classe, recognitions that underline the ecological value of a forest sitting squarely within an urban setting.
At the heart of the wood, a former fish pond has evolved into a natural marsh recognised as an ecological reserve since the late 1990s. Radiating outward from this central pool, a network of straight alleys fans through the trees in a star pattern. These paths were originally laid out as riding alleys for the Chateau de Thouars, used for traditional hunting, and have been preserved as firebreaks and forestry access routes. Today they offer some of the most peaceful woodland walks anywhere near Bordeaux.
Remarkable biodiversity in an urban setting
The Bois de Thouars shelters an Atlantic pedunculate oak forest, interspersed with rarer protected species such as the Tauzin oak. The central pond sustains a wetland ecosystem of considerable richness. Among the more unusual plants are the Bird's-nest Orchid, a wild orchid entirely lacking chlorophyll, and the Water Violet, an aquatic perennial also known as featherfoil. Over a hundred other plant species have been recorded around the pond area alone.
The woodland also serves as a refuge for a wide range of wildlife. Common species such as wild boar, red squirrels, buzzards, herons, rabbits, green woodpeckers and great spotted woodpeckers share the habitat with rarer residents including kingfishers, pipistrelle bats and the hermit beetle, a protected saproxylic species. The proximity of such varied fauna and flora to both a university campus and the historic centre of Bordeaux is genuinely exceptional.
What to see and do
The natural area includes the Chateau de Thouars itself, a hunting lodge built within the royal forest between the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries for the English kings, on the site of a thirteenth-century fortified house erected by the Bishop of Bath. The chateau later became the seat of a local seigneurie before passing into municipal ownership. Today it hosts cultural events, and its lawns serve as a venue for open-air performances and children's play areas.
Elsewhere within the 60-hectare site are sports pitches, the Pierre-Paul Bernard stadium, the Henri-Deschamps swimming complex, Talence Tennis Club and a games library. The wood itself is crossed by a four-kilometre educational trail marked with information panels on the local flora and fauna. Families come for woodland walks and picnics, runners for the shaded paths, and on Sundays the Thouars market draws crowds looking for fresh produce and regional specialities from local producers.
