Meeting Maison Badie: Wine Excellence at the Heart of Bordeaux’s Triangle d'Or
Since 1880, Maison Badie has embodied Bordeaux’s wine culture. Located on the Allées de Tourny, this historic address now offers a selection of nearly 3,800 references and perpetuates a savoir-faire built on close relationships with producers, expert advice, and a deep passion for terroir.

A true Bordeaux institution nestled in the Triangle d'Or, Maison Badie has, for over a century, represented the art of selecting and sharing wine. Founded in 1880, this iconic wine merchant has evolved with the times while preserving its core standards: offering wines, champagnes, and spirits carefully sourced through direct relationships with estates. From rare discoveries to timeless classics and tasting experiences, Badie continues to write its story while guiding both enthusiasts and connoisseurs on a journey through the world’s finest terroirs.
Badie was founded in 1880 by Madame Badie in an 18th-century building in the heart of Bordeaux. Could you tell us more?
Indeed, Madame Badie was the originator of this historic house, which initially offered fine groceries and rare products. It was acquired in 1991 by the Moueix family, who chose to focus exclusively on wine. Since then, we have continued to build on this legacy with the same philosophy and high standards.
A key priority for us is the quality of our sourcing. Before wines, champagnes, and spirits reach the shop, we work directly with estates, allowing us to purchase at source and store them in our own cellars. This ensures controlled provenance and optimal storage conditions for our clients.
With nearly 3,800 references, how do you build your wine selection? What are your selection criteria? How do you source more confidential, exceptional, or even unique cuvées?
At Badie, we offer a true journey through French vineyards—from Burgundy to the Loire Valley, via the Rhône and the Terrasses du Larzac—while also opening access to major international terroirs: the United States, South America, Europe, and New Zealand. This is complemented by a carefully curated selection of spirits, from gin and rum to whisky and cognac.
We work closely with the buyers of Duclot and remain attentive to both emerging trends and customer preferences. Whenever possible, we meet producers directly to offer both renowned classics and exciting new discoveries in-store.
Badie is a must-visit address for champagnes and fine sparkling wines. How do you strike the right balance between major houses and more discreet estates, and could you name three cuvées you particularly enjoy introducing to your clients?
Champagne is a vineyard in constant evolution, driven by both major houses and independent winemakers. Since 1996, Badie Champagnes—located opposite Badie Vins & Spiritueux—has been entirely dedicated to this terroir, offering champagne, still wines, ratafia, and marc de Champagne.
We present the full spectrum of the region: vintage cuvées, single-parcel wines, rosés—ensuring a complete discovery. Among our favorites are Champagne Badie, crafted by winemaker Pierre Trichet and available by the bottle (€25.90), Franck Bonville Unisson Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs (€46), and Billecart-Salmon “Le Sous Bois” (€79).
A year after the reopening of Badie Vins & Spiritueux, Badie Champagnes has unveiled a new setting. What was the guiding thread behind this transformation, and what would you like people to feel when they step through the door?
We wanted to convey what this region inspires in us.: chalk, gold tones, brass, and stone—materials and colors that immediately call Champagne to mind and transport our clients to Reims without leaving Bordeaux.
Our aim is to create a welcoming space where everyone feels comfortable stepping inside. Our passionate team of wine advisors guides each guest through the diversity of Champagne with tailored recommendations suited to all tastes and budgets.
What about spirits?
We have a genuine passion for spirits, to which we’ve dedicated a space designed like a showcase. Here, whiskies, gins, rums, cognacs, and armagnacs coexist. The idea is to offer a selection that is both demanding and accessible, appealing to curious newcomers as well as seasoned enthusiasts. You will find both renowned major houses and more confidential bottles, across a wide range of price points.
Beyond in-store advice, what services can your clients (sometimes without realizing it) find at Badie—such as delivery, gift assistance, spoken languages, special formats, etc.?
Our wine advisors speak French, English, Spanish, and Portuguese. We offer delivery within Bordeaux (intra-boulevards) from €250 in purchases. For gifts, we pay special attention to presentation: elegant wrapping, bespoke gift boxes… all part of the full Badie experience.
We also offer large-format bottles, from magnums (1.5L) to Nebuchadnezzars (15L), adding a unique dimension to special occasions.
You host small-group masterclasses from 8:00 pm to 10:00 pm exploring diverse themes. How does a typical evening unfold, and what do participants learn or experience that differs from a standard tasting?
Throughout the year, we organize various events. Every Saturday from 2 pm to 6 pm, we host open tastings—spirits, wines, champagnes… there is something for everyone’s taste. It’s creating a convivial moment to discover new cuvées and engage with our team and estate ambassadors.
We also offer a monthly masterclass, designed and led by our team around specific themes—grape varieties, vintages, countries. The wine advisors select several cuvées related to the theme and share their knowledge, anecdotes, and discoveries during a friendly experience, accompanied by cure meats and cheese boards, as well as food pairings with each wine..
In addition, private tastings are also available from 8 pm, fully tailored to guests’ preferences and budgets.
If you had to give one piece of advice—A simple wine pairing recommendation for someone who “doesn’t know much about wine but just wants to enjoy it”?
That’s exactly our role! Don’t hesitate to step in—we’re here to guide you towards wines that will elevate your meals. A Bordeaux red with a rib of beef, a white Burgundy with fish, or a Loire white with poultry are excellent starting points.
We also enjoy challenging preconceived ideas. We also enjoy challenging preconceived ideas. For example, while cheese is often naturally paired with red wine, a white wine can be exceptional with goat cheese or Comté. Above all, we adapt to your taste—the key is finding a wine that truly gives you pleasure.
We are here in the heart of the Triangle d’Or, around the Allées de Tourny, an prestigious district of Bordeaux. If you had to recommend one or two addresses, you particularly enjoy—whether nearby or elsewhere—which would you choose?
To enjoy great food paired with an excellent wine list, I would recommend two must-visit restaurants in Bordeaux: Amicis, 19 rue Mably, perfect for indulging in their superb lunch menu, and Le Carreau, 30 rue du Pas-Saint-Georges in the
Saint-Pierre district, known for its delicious, convivial dishes in a relaxed atmosphere.
Badie is part of Duclot, a Fine Wine Merchant also owning L’Intendant, located just 300 meters away and entirely dedicated to Bordeaux wines.
