History of Baurech

By the river on the right bank of the Garonne, Baurech is a town in the Entre-deux-Mers natural region. Nestled around its 12th century church, the town did not experience the demographic explosion of the 1960s and 1970s which profoundly changed many municipalities in the urban unit of Bordeaux. Very well preserved, the village of 900 inhabitants has seen its population increase by barely a third since the 19th century. The history of Baurech is closely linked to that of Entre-deux-Mers: in the middle of the vineyards, its territory is rich in numerous castles and mansions which testify to the ancient attractiveness of the Bordeaux hinterland. . The vineyards for which the region is famous today developed there in the 16th century, under the leadership of the Benedictine monks.

In the Garonne valley, Baurech has a remarkable heritage, consisting of its listed church dedicated to Saint-Saturnin but also many castles: the neo-classical building of the 18th Puygueraud, the Pressac castle and its welcoming park, Nenine sur les former lands of the Black Prince seigneury, Lyde castle and its listed feudal chapel, Laroche castle, Lacaussade castle and its square keep, Gaussens castle, in the Lambert des Granges family since 1750 and whose park shelters a spring generous, the former domain of the Archbishop of Canteloup, or the astonishing Château de Bellevue built in the 15th century. In addition to these historic châteaux, the territory of Baurech is home to many wine estates and châteaux, in the heart of a vineyard where several appellations rub shoulders: Bordeaux, Bordeaux Supérieurs, Première Côtes de Bordeaux and Entre-deux-Mers. The town is traversed by hiking trails that allow you to discover its precious heritage on foot and reach the unspoiled banks of the Garonne.

Just 20 km from the hypercentre of Bordeaux, in the privileged environment of the right bank of the Garonne, Baurech is a Gascon village with a rare quality of life. Saint-Jean train station can be reached in less than 30 minutes by car. Baurech is also served by bus line 501 which runs between Langon and Bordeaux Stalingrad. With its port on the Garonne, the town offers a precious living environment and many leisure activities to its inhabitants, in particular a sailing club, tennis courts and a horse riding center. Lake Baurech is designed for water skiing. In the village there is an antique store. The town also has a pizzeria. Families settling in Baurech benefit from childcare services, including a nursery and elementary school with a canteen. A playground and a city stadium are among the leisure facilities popular with children of all ages.
